More people are transitioning from working 9 to 5 corporate job to working for themselves in a freelance career.

Switching from 9 to 5 corporate job to freelance job

Here are some tips before switching:

Do not quit your job yet.

One mistake many people make when turning to freelance is to leave their corporate job abruptly. You need to realize that as a freelancer, it may take months to earn a living wage. Work for a few hours a day as a freelance can help you develop clients that will be your base when you decide to quit. You may also choose not to leave your current corporate job because your skills need to polish for you to compete in the freelancing world. Spend a few months before you quit your current job, once you have made enough money and you need emergency funds just in case a freelance is not going as planned.

You should know your worth.

Before setting your rates, research the current rates of some professionals in your field. Polishing your skills will give you confidence when discussing payments with clients. It is important not to underestimate yourself and make sure that you are good at what you do. You don't need to prove that the fees you charge are reasonable and not be swayed by cheap leads. Be strong if you are good at your job, you have no reason not to get paid.

Secure Your First Client(s).

Time is one of the major constraints faced by anyone hoping to transform from a corporate job employee to freelancing. You still have 40 hours to devote to your daily work, and after that, you are exhausted. You don’t have enough time or energy to commit the same amount of time to start your freelance career. If you can find one client before resigning, you are in a better position than starting from scratch. It's a great opportunity to boost your confidence. And, if you can get two or three clients before you resign, then your starting point is even higher. The smart way to change your career is to replace your full-time income before you quit, even though we have already mentioned, time will limit you to manage it.

The last piece of advice I can give to those who still doubt: Remember, you can always change your situation. If you try to work as a freelancer and find that it doesn't work for you, there is always another option to find another job. But what if it is for you? Trust me you will enjoy extra freedom, exciting projects, meeting new people, and the complete satisfaction of working in pajamas.
